FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, July 16, 2024 — The American Chemical Society (ACS) will honor researchers and companies as Heroes of Chemistry for creating and enhancing products that have led to significant advancements in sustainability and global health. The ceremony to honor these impressive achievements will take place on Thursday, Oct. 10, in Washington, D.C.

“The solutions made possible by the 2024 ACS Heroes of Chemistry demonstrate the essential role of chemistry in sustainably developing and enhancing products and processes,” says ACS President Mary K. Carroll. “I am honored to recognize teams of industrial chemical professionals at AbbVie, Amgen, Bristol Myers Squibb, Corteva, DuPont and Savanah River Mission Completion for innovations that improve our world.”

Scientific teams in industry are being honored for the following achievements:

AbbVie: Rinvoq® is an oral JAK inhibitor approved in more than 70 countries to treat certain immune-mediated diseases. By reducing the activity of an enzyme, it lowers inflammation, which helps patients achieve disease control.

Amgen and Bristol Myers Squibb: Otezla® is the first and only oral treatment approved for adults with plaque psoriasis across all severities and the only approved treatment for oral ulcers associated with Behçet’s disease; it is also approved for adults with active psoriatic arthritis.

Corteva Agriscience: Rinskor active is a broad-spectrum herbicide for rice, aquatics and various other crops to control broadleaf and sedge weeds. It rapidly degrades in the environment and has a favorable ecological and environmental profile, making it a sustainable weed control solution.

DuPont: Styrofoam™ Brand XPS Insulation is energy efficient and now made with a low global warming potential formulation that is 94% lower in embodied carbon. With its trusted performance and industry-leading track record of more than 80 years, it's a good choice for sustainable building projects.

Savannah River Mission Completion: Eliminating Cold War-era nuclear waste is the mission for this company. The team has developed two methods to remove harmful radioactive isotopes from millions of gallons of radioactive waste at the Savannah River Site.

The 2024 winners will be inducted into the Heroes of Chemistry scientific hall of fame, which ACS has sponsored annually since 1996.

Special thanks to the ACS Board Committee on Corporation Associates, which evaluated the applications and selected the winners.

The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a nonprofit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress. ACS’ mission is to advance the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and all its people. The Society is a global leader in promoting excellence in science education and providing access to chemistry-related information and research through its multiple research solutions, peer-reviewed journals, scientific conferences, eBooks and weekly news periodical Chemical & Engineering News. ACS journals are among the most cited, most trusted and most read within the scientific literature; however, ACS itself does not conduct chemical research. As a leader in scientific information solutions, its CAS division partners with global innovators to accelerate breakthroughs by curating, connecting and analyzing the world’s scientific knowledge. ACS’ main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.
